|Gladys Joann Boone, 90 years old, entered into the Lordís loving presence on September 26, 2013. She had been a resident of Bakersfield for the last 35 years. Gladys was born on May 31, 1923, in Hollis, Oklahoma, to Green and Hattie Totty. She was the last surviving child out of nine siblings. Gladys moved to Wasco, California, at the age of 16 and married Mart Boone on March 12, 1940. Together for 59 years until Mart passed away in 1998, they raised four children, Jim Boone (Pam) of Pismo Beach, Kathy Boone of Galt, Trish Mills (Mike) of Lancaster, and Jack Boone (Claire) of Bakersfield. She has left behind nine cherished grandchildren, Nikki, Debbie (Billy), Missy (Jason), Mart, Amanda, Mark, Carrie, Erica (Ben), Philip; and eight beautiful great-grandchildren, Danny, Chelsy, Caitlyn, Audrina, Joshua, Faith, Rebecca, and Madison.
Gladys grew up during the Depression years, only attended school though the 4th grade, and knew what it was like to work and struggle to get by with only the bare necessities. In 1953, she and Mart started a construction business, Boone Construction, which operated in and around the Bakersfield area. In 1959, they moved to California City, where the company played a major role in the cityís development from 1959 until 1978, when they eventually settled back in the Bakersfield area. Ten years later as they prepared to retire and have their sons, Jim and Jack, take over the construction company, they hit the jackpot by winning the California State Lottery! This allowed Gladys and Mart to retire in style and to live worry free during the next 25 years. Gladys was a loving, caring, and generous woman who loved to spend time with family and friends. As her health allowed, she continued to gamble and play the lottery and the slots whenever the opportunity presented itself!
We will always remember and miss her great smile and the sound of her laughter but can rejoice in the knowledge that she and Dad have been reunited for eternity and that we will all be back together one day. We love you, Mom!
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 4, 2013, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Her service will be on Saturday, October 5, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. at Greenlawn Southwest Memorial Chapel, 2739 Panama Lane. A reception for family and friends will be held at Jack and Claireís home after the service. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to your favorite charity in Momís memory.
